scaling impact: a custom brand & web overhaul for yellowhammer outdoor development
Yellowhammer Outdoor Development is a nonprofit dedicated to revitalizing Alabama’s communities by transforming underutilized urban spaces into vibrant outdoor assets. By focusing on the intersection of economic development and environmental stewardship, they create parks, trails, and greenways that act as catalysts for local business growth and community wellness. Despite their high-impact work, Yellowhammer’s digital presence didn’t match the professional scale of their projects. They needed a brand identity and a digital “home” that could communicate complex infrastructure goals to partners and organizations, while remaining inviting and accessible to the local community and potential donors.
the active part i played
I partnered with George from Elsqrd to execute a complete brand overhaul and web development project. Our goal was to build a “digital ecosystem” that reflected the physical ecosystems Yellowhammer builds every day.
Before EBD
- Custom Brand Identity: Developed a new visual language, including a refined logo and color palette that reflects Alabama’s natural landscape—balancing professional “architectural” tones with organic, earthy elements.
- High-Performance WordPress Site: Built a custom, responsive website designed for longevity. Unlike “boxed” nonprofit builders, this site allows for complete ownership of content and data.
- Asset Mapping & Visualization: Integrated galleries and project sections to showcase their outdoor transformations, making the “urban-to-green” impact visible to stakeholders.
- Operational Efficiency: Streamlined their digital overhead by migrating to specialized nonprofit hosting and implementing robust, low-cost maintenance tools.
the outcome
The new platform has provided Yellowhammer with a professional “anchor” for their advocacy efforts. By lowering their recurring technology costs and providing a more scalable site structure, the organization can now focus more of its budget on physical development projects across Alabama rather than troubleshooting its digital presence.
